The Sick Lipstick - Sting Sting Sting

When I first moved to Toronto, Canada from the UK, the local music scene seemed to be on fire. Awesome bands all seemingly feeding from the same pool of inspiration but all drawing their own conclusions. Bands like The Red Light Sting and Death From Above (1979). My favourite of the bunch by far was definitely The Sick Lipstick. Sure, the singer could be a little grating at times and was a potty mouthed little brat but it suits, and the music still shreds. Literally.

I'm not entirely sure what happened, because the feeling was short lived. DFA79 got huge, and local musicians got themselves an attitude. I haven't really liked a local band since.

To give you an idea of how good The Sick Lipstick were on stage - it most definitely worked better live than on record - sans that all insulting hipster attitude that's plagued their contemporary contemporaries, here's a marvellous clip from some gig they played at Sneaky Dees in 2003.

The Delgados - Cinecentre EP

There was a bunch of early Delgados singles that never made it onto any album. I reckon this was the best of the bunch, especially considering it features a version of Thirteen Gliding Principles that pre-dates its inferior inclusion on The Great Eastern by some considerable years.
